Three for Three: Sourcing Film Locations
From Tech Recces on Welsh film sets to scouting and securing locations for three MA student productions.
It’s My Shout, a Welsh film production company, gave me my start in locations work — attending Tech Recces to assess whether a site could actually support filming, helping manage the unit base on set and working with the Locations Manager to build the visual identity of upcoming productions through targeted scouting.
That experience led to three separate voluntary Location Scout and Manager roles for MA Film student productions at the University of South Wales, working independently across each production’s pre-production stage. I interpreted each director’s brief, researched and identified matching real-world locations using Google Maps, Airbnb, Booking.com and in-person visits, then contacted property owners directly to negotiate filming permissions — fees, dates and exactly which parts of the property the shoot would need.
All three productions used the locations I sourced, and each director confirmed the locations were right for their film.
